"Excerpts from a Life" 3 Minute Clip |

"Excerpts From A Life" is a 90-minute video employing a screen split into four quadrants. Each quadrant contains a different looped sequence. The four sequences of the video are: a lone tree on the Wyoming prairie (30-minute loop); a black female dancer (15 minutes); a 1950's Halloween party (3 minutes); and a pot filled with Kraft macaroni and cheese (5 minutes).
The soundtrack consists of six original songs sandwiched in between the ambient sound of the wind blowing through the tree; the slurpy sound of food being stirred; and James Brown's rendition of "Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud". The soundtrack is itself looped over the entire piece. The effect of the looping-within-looping of sounds which first harmonize, then conflict with the visuals, creates a variety of changing moods and emotions as the work unfolds. The uneven and hypnotic rhythms evoke natural, cultural and spiritual aspects of America.
